01 / 08

Add an idea

Lavoro in centro e vivo vicino alla stazione.

I work in the centre and live near the station.

E joins related ideas. Do not confuse e, and, with è, is.

02 / 08

Show a contrast

Mi piace Roma, ma è cara.

I like Rome, but it’s expensive.

È caro, però si mangia bene.

It’s expensive, but the food is good.

Ma and però both introduce a contrast. You can start simply with ma between two clauses.

03 / 08

Give a reason

Non esco perché devo lavorare.

I’m not going out because I have to work.

Perché answers why as well as asking it. Add a full reason after it.

04 / 08

Show the result

Piove, quindi prendiamo la metro.

It’s raining, so we’ll take the metro.

Quindi points from a reason to its result. It moves the story forward logically.

05 / 08

Add someone or something

Viene anche Giulia.

Giulia is coming too.

Prendo anche un’acqua.

I’ll have a water as well.

Anche usually comes before the part it adds. Placement changes what is included.

06 / 08

Sequence or alternative

Mangiamo, poi usciamo.

We’ll eat, then go out.

Io prendo il treno. Giulia invece va in macchina.

I’m taking the train. Giulia, on the other hand, is going by car.

Poi tells what comes next; invece switches to a contrasting person, action or choice.

07 / 08

Make a condition

Se hai tempo, prendiamo un caffè.

If you have time, let’s have a coffee.

Se means if. For straightforward plans, se + present works well with another present-tense clause.

Remember this

Takeaway

Vorrei uscire, ma piove. Quindi resto a casa e cucino. Se vuoi, vieni a cena.

I’d like to go out, but it’s raining. So I’m staying home and cooking. If you want, come for dinner.

Choose the relationship first: addition, reason, result or contrast. Two or three linked ideas are enough for a useful turn in conversation.
